I think this is why community and the loss of because of Boomers is so important. Let's say she and I were both part of the same church community and it was our major social circle. Now divorce isn't just dumping me, it's dumping every single member of the community and all the things they had to offer. No more hanging out with the young girls, no more matronly advice or cookies from the older grandmas, no more enjoying playing with all the toddlers, etc etc. Divorce becomes self-exile which is a step very few humans, muchless a cautious woman, wants to take.

That's the teeth that got ripped out of marriage in the last 50 years.

Indeed. Well said. This was the reason I never married--I figured, given my below-average interpersonal skills and above-average earning ability, I was a good target for a gold-digger who would pull exactly this scam. I figured it was better to grow old and die alone with all my money than with half my money. My parents are still together after 40+ years...but they are from a different era.
